Hobo Pie

Summer 2010, Dan and I went on our first camping trip together. We stayed at the Rifle River campground up north.  It is absolutely beautiful, by the way.
Well, while planning the trip, Dan found out that I had never made "hobo-pie," so he insisted that we make it. Apparently, the recipe is extremely easy, which is perfect for a camping trip. As long as you have a sandwich iron.
One of these things
All you need to bring is a can of your favorite pie fillings, a loaf of bread, and some butter or non-stick spray. Oh, and having a can opener helps too. Unfortunately that was one thing we forgot to bring. Luckily Dan had his knife.
I helped stab the can open too.
"That's not a knife, this is a knife!"

First get your campfire ready, let it burn down so you don't burn the pie. Next you butter the bread and put one slice in the iron butter side down. Then scoop some pie filling in the center of the bread and then put the second slice butter side up (kinda like making a grilled cheese sandwich). Then close the iron and put it into the fire for a few minutes. Then pull it out of the fire, open the iron and use tongs to grab it out of the iron if you have them. You don't want to burn yourself. After you let it cool, dig in! This treat definitely gives the average campfire 'smore a run for its money, even though we had those too.

They were so yummy!
